John Demko, MD (started research training 2020)

Research Mentor: David Pearce, MD
Project: The overarching goal of my research is is focused on the molecular mechanisms of sodium, potassium, and glucose homeostasis in the kidney. Building on prior work with SGK-1 and aldosterone signaling pathways, we are now focused on mTOR complex 2 and its role in ENaC and potassium transport in the distal nephron. Our group is also working to define the mechanism of potassium-sensing within the kidney and the role of WNK kinases. We primarily use transgenic mice and cell culture models for our work. Globally, I am interested in mechanisms of hypertension, metabolic syndrome, electrolyte homeostasis, and identifying novel therapeutic targets for these disorders.
